Things To Do In Louisville KY

Louisville Kentucky
Louisville Slugger Museum

Are you looking for something to do in Louisville, Kentucky? Whether you are visiting for a short time or a life-long resident, you’ll be glad to know that there are plenty of exciting things to explore in Kentucky’s largest city.

1) Take a Distillery Tour

If there is one thing that Kentucky is known for, it’s bourbon (or horse racing – but we’ll get there in a minute). Louisville has a rich history in the production and distribution of bourbon, including many recognizable brands that survived through the era of prohibition. If you know much about bourbon, you probably already know that the historic Bourbon Trail is just a short drive from Louisville. If you don’t have the time to venture outside of the city, there are plenty of great tours offered nearby. Jim Beam, Old Forester, Michter’s, Bulleit and Angels envy are all popular brands offering tours within a 30-minute drive of downtown Louisville. You can find a list of Bourbon Distilleries in Louisville here.

2) Take in a Horse Race at Churchill Downs

No list of things to do in Louisville would be complete without mentioning Churchill Downs. Best known for its hosting of the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May. If you want to avoid the crowds of people flocking to Louisville from all over the country, we’d suggest hitting the tracks on another day. Luckily for you, there are three meets: the Spring meet (from May to early July), the September meet (in September) and the Fall meet (from late October through Thanksgiving). But be sure to check the Calendar ahead of time. You can find the race information on the track’s website as well as tour information.

3) Visit A Museum

Louisville is a major culture hub in Kentucky and offers visitors and residents an array of museums and exhibits that the whole family can enjoy. The Kentucky Derby Museum offers a vast history of Louisville horse racing, the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory offers an engaging history of baseball (and the world’s largest bat), and the Muhammad Ali Center offers a history of one of the city’s most notable residents.

4) Visit Waterfront Park and Cross The Big Four Bridge

One spot favorited by many local residents is Waterfront Park and the Big Four Bridge. Louisville’s waterfront on the Ohio River is perhaps best experienced at its aptly-named Waterfront Park. Host to many concerts and festivals throughout the year, it also includes a walking path along the river. This walking path continues across the Big Four Bridge, a walking bridge to the city of Jeffersonville, Indiana. The bridge is most recognizable at night, when colorful lights illuminate Louisville’s skyline.
